NBL vs NBA Rules: Every Key Difference Explained
The NBL plays under FIBA rules, not NBA rules. Here's how game length, the three-point line, fouls, goaltending, timeouts and defensive rules differ between the two leagues.

If you grew up watching the NBA, an NBL game will feel familiar but not identical. The NBL plays under the international rules set by FIBA, basketball's world governing body, with a handful of league-specific tweaks. Shorter games, bigger possessions
Eight fewer minutes means fewer possessions, so NBL scores are naturally lower than NBA scores. A team scoring 90 points in the NBL is roughly as productive as an NBA team scoring 110. A shorter three-point line
The FIBA arc sits at 6.75 metres, about half a metre closer than the NBA line at the top of the key. It is a big reason the three-pointer is such a central part of the NBL game, and why shooters from the NBL often need an adjustment period in the NBA. Fouls: five and you're done
NBL players foul out on their fifth personal foul, one fewer than in the NBA, and the game is shorter. Foul trouble shapes rotations far more than it does in the NBA, and a star picking up a second foul early often goes straight to the bench.
Team fouls work per quarter. Once a team has committed four fouls in a quarter, every further defensive foul sends the opponent to the free throw line. There is no NBA-style extra rule for the last two minutes of a quarter.
Instead of flagrant fouls, FIBA uses the unsportsmanlike foul (for excessive contact or a foul that makes no attempt to play the ball) and the disqualifying foul (an instant ejection). Two unsportsmanlike fouls, or two technical fouls, also mean a player is ejected.
Goaltending and the rim
This is the difference that confuses NBA fans most. Under FIBA rules, once a shot has touched the ring, the ball is live and any player can play it, even if it is still bouncing on the rim. In the NBA, touching the ball while it is on or directly above the rim is basket interference. Expect to see NBL bigs tip rebounds off the rim that would be whistled in the NBA.
No defensive three seconds
FIBA has no defensive three-second rule, so NBL defenders can sit in the paint as long as they like. Zone defences and packed-in help defence are common, and it rewards teams who can shoot from the perimeter.
Timeouts and challenges
Only coaches can call timeouts in FIBA basketball. Each team gets two timeouts in the first half and three in the second half, with a limit on how many can be used in the last two minutes, plus one in each overtime period. The NBL also uses video review, including a coach's challenge on certain calls.
