Brownlow Medal FAQ

Who won the 2023 Brownlow Medal?

Lachie Neale (Brisbane Lions) won the 2023 Brownlow Medal with 31 votes, 2 ahead of Marcus Bontempelli on 29.

How does Brownlow Medal voting work?

After every home-and-away game the field umpires give 3 votes to the player they judged best on ground, 2 to the second best and 1 to the third. Finals don't count. The votes stay sealed until count night, the Monday before the grand final, and the player with the most votes wins the medal.

Can a suspended player win the Brownlow?

No. A player suspended by the AFL Tribunal during the season is ineligible, though their votes are still read out and counted.

Votes are from the AFL's count, game by game from 2021. Every game's 3-2-1 is on its match page.
